About the Department
The Department of Physical Education and Sports at Loknete Balasaheb Thorat Arts, Commerce and Science College, Talegaon Dighe, aims to foster a culture of health and fitness among students. Established under the Savitribai Phule Pune University, the department is dedicated to developing proficient scholars and professionals who embody human values and are committed to promoting awareness about health, fitness, and wellness in society.

Mission
- Provide quality teaching based on pedagogical learning and research in cognitive, psycho-motor, and affective domains in physical education and sports.
- Raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity through extension lectures and demonstrations.
- Collaborate with organizations to promote quality life through practical exposure, internships, and officiating in various sports events.
- Offer consultancy and training programs for different organizations to conduct sports and fitness events.

Credits: 2 (Semester-II)
Aim of the Course
To make Physical Education an integral part of the educational system and promote physical activity among sedentary students/non-sportsmen. The course ensures that students improve their health during their college education.
Objectives of the Course
- Enhance physical efficiency and maintain fitness of mind and body.
- Prepare students to be mentally alert and physically efficient to withstand daily life strains and fatigue.
- Equip students with skills to face different life barriers through strenuous training.

Credit 1: Introduction to Physical Education and Sports
- Definition and Scope of Physical Education
- Concept of Physical Fitness
- Components of Health-Related Physical Fitness: Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Strength Endurance, Flexibility, and Body Composition
- Physical Activity Guidelines for Health Benefits
- Concept of Health, Wellness, and Health & Hygiene
- Participation in Games and Sports: History, Ground measurements, Skills, and Basic rules of selected games/sports
Credit 2: Fitness Assessment
- Participation in a game/sport from the list of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi
- Fitness assessment includes:
- Cardiovascular Endurance
- Flexibility
- Muscular Strength Endurance
- Body Composition (no marks)
Evaluation Structure
First Credit:
- 5 theory lectures
- Participation in selected game/sport for a minimum of 10 hours
- Handwritten project work on the selected sports event
Fitness Test:
- Conducted in the second semester
- Components tested: Cardiovascular Endurance, Flexibility, Muscular Strength Endurance, Body Composition
Fitness Test Components
- Modified Queens College Step Test:
- Objective: Assess cardio-respiratory fitness
- Validity: Correlation of -0.75 with VO2 max
- Reliability: Coefficient of 0.92
- Procedure: 3 minutes stepping test with pulse count
- Scoring: Pulse count multiplied by 4
- Twelve Minute Run and Walk Test:
- Objective: Measure cardio-respiratory endurance
- Validity: 0.90 with treadmill oxygen consumption
- Reliability: 0.94 with test-retest method
- Procedure: Run or walk as far as possible in 12 minutes
- Scoring: Distance covered in meters
- Sit and Reach Test:
- Objective: Measure hip and back flexion and hamstring extension
- Reliability: 0.94
- Procedure: Stretch forward with heels aligned with the yardstick
- Scoring: Best of three trials measured in centimeters
- Bent Knee Sit Ups:
- Objective: Measure dynamic endurance of abdominal muscles
- Procedure: Perform as many sit-ups as possible in 60 seconds
- Scoring: Number of correctly executed sit-ups
Criteria of Passing
- Minimum 40% in each credit and 40% aggregate in each course.
- Students must complete the entire course to be eligible for the 5th semester.
